The role of your GP

As a parent or carer of a child with complex medical needs, you are an important part of your child's healthcare team. You have a vital role in taking care of your child's health. Your child's doctor, called a General Practitioner (GP), is also an important team member.

In Australia, the GP is sometimes called a ‘primary healthcare provider’. The GP is the main doctor for most people and is often the first person people see when they have a health problem. GPs can help your child in many different ways, including:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses.
  • Vaccinations and screening tests.
  • Referral to specialists for further treatment.
  • Management of chronic conditions.
  • Support for your child's mental health needs.

See your child's GP regularly. If it is difficult to book in with the same GP or to get an appointment when you need one, consider booking a few appointments in advance or keeping a standing appointment (e.g. once a month).

Tips for working with GPs

Taking care of children with complex medical needs can be complicated because they need help from many different teams. It's hard for one doctor to know everything about your child's health.

Below are some tips for working with a GP to ensure your child and family’s needs are met:

  • Meet with the GP and discuss your child's medical history and current needs. Make sure they are aware of any medications, allergies, and ongoing medical concerns.
  • Build a relationship with your GP. It's important to feel comfortable and confident communicating with them about your child's care. Don't hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification if you're unsure about anything.
  • Ensure that your GP is aware of all the specialists involved in your child's care. Your GP should be able to speak with these specialists and communicate any updates or changes in treatment.
